Arrowrock
Hostel is in the townland of Ballynary on the shore of Lough Arrow in
County Sligo. The exact date it was built is unknown but it was a large
working farm in the early 1800’s. According to the previous owners (the
property was in their family for well over a 100 years) the first home
on the site was here from the early 1700’s.
The black and white
pictures on the right date from the 1920’s. The bottom photo shows a
horse and cart used for drawing tubs of water from the lake. The colour
photo in the middle shows our main entrance and is taken from a
similar angle.
Arrowrock Hostel was known as Rockview Farm
throughout the 1800’s and into the early 1960’s. It was one of the
larger farms in the area until the 1940’s when it was broken up by the
Land Commission and the land sold off to neighbouring small farmers.
Arrowrock
Hostel,or Rockview Farm as it was then known, has welcomed guests since
the 1800’s. Back then most visitors were either anglers fishing on
Lough Arrow or hunting parties.
In the 1960’s Rockview
Farm was converted into a 10 room hotel and was renamed Rock House
Hotel. In 1988 the family who originally farmed here bought Rock House
Hotel and it was again renamed. This time to Rockview Hotel (reclaiming
the old family farm name) and so it remained until we converted the
business to a hostel in the spring and early summer of 2009 and
Arrowrock Hostel came into being.
